Inland shipping specialist apprenticeships for a bright future – information day for teachers and career advisers in cooperation with Reederei Deymann from Haren

On 25 October 2018, teachers and career advisers attended an interesting information day to learn about jobs in inland shipping. The event was initiated by the German Federal Employment Agency in Nordhorn and the VME-Stiftung Osnabrück – Emsland, the education foundation of the NiedersachsenMetall employer association. Additionally, the Schiffer-Berufskolleg Rhein, the training ship “Rhein” and Jade University for Nautical Science in Elsfleth talked about the inland shipping profession and the Maritime and Port Logistics degree programme. Reederei Deymann in Haren helped organise the information day for the inland shipping trade and offered attendees a glimpse into the shipping business. Fittingly, the event was held on the renovated inland ship “Otto Deymann sen.”, in Haren’s marina.

After founder and proprietor Martin Deymann’s detailed presentation of the shipping company, apprentice Timm Pohling, alongside vocational school representatives, reported on the day-to-day work at the company and the inland shipping specialist apprenticeship programme. But the information day didn’t just comprise talks; attendees were also able to see and explore a Deymann ship themselves as a way of getting to know the job up close and personal.

After a morning of exciting activities that introduced the inland shipping profession, attendees were invited to tour the Ems in an old restored tugboat.
Reederei Deymann in Haren is active exclusively in the field of inland shipping and operates its own fleet of tankers and freight and cargo ships throughout Europe. Deymann offers training in a range of trades to ensure a qualified workforce for its fleet in future. With the information day, the association, vocational school and shipping company hoped to make the inland shipping profession appealing to the next generation of workers to secure new qualified professionals.
